Lemon Scented Myrtle - Essential oil of Backhousia citriodora: description & uses
The wonderful tangy aroma of Lemon Myrtle is used in Australian bush cuisine, perfumery and aromatherapy applications. Reminiscent of lemon and of the true Melissa oil, it is an excellent blending oil with long-lasting characteristics.
- Place of origin
- North-Eastern New South Wales, Queensland (Australia)
- Production method
- Steam distilled from the leaves and twigs of Backhousia citriodora (plantation trees)
- Main components
- Citral
- Aroma
- Fine, rounded lemon scent with mild spicy undertones.
- Main uses
- Australian bush cuisine, perfumery, cosmetics, aromatherapy.
- Comments
- An extraordinary citrus-like oil, with enormous potential for both aromatherapy and cosmetics/perfumery uses.
- Safety notes
- Since citral is said to be a powerful skin irritant, always use diluted in direct skin applications. Maximum usage ratio suggested by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration is 1%.
For full details, refer to MSDS, GC and Physicochemical Data reports from supplier/distiller..
- Blending suggestions
- A fine oils on its own, it blends well with virtually any other EO's, and particularly the Australian ones, to give them a superb "lift". Very good, both on its own and in combination with citrus oils, to help keep the "tangy" note. Some suggested blends you might like to try include:
- 2 parts nerolina, 1 part lemon-myrtle, 1 part blue cypress
- 3 parts eucalyptus, 2 parts peppermint, 1 part lemon myrtle
- 1 part rosalina, 1 part nerolina, 1 part lemon-myrtle
- 3 parts niaouli, 2 parts lemon tea-tree, 1 part lemon-myrtle
- 3 parts niaouli, 2 parts eucalyptus, 1 part lemon-myrtle
- 4 parts orange five fold (or sweet orange), 1 part lemon-myrtle
- Further information
- Gernot Katzer's Spice Pages (University of Graz, Austria): lemon myrtle. Notice the reference to lemon tea tree as Leptospermum citratum.
