AquaSapone, premium grade essential oils from Australia for aromatherapy and cosmetics
ABC - Australian blue cypress - Essential oil of Callitris intratropica - blue: description & uses
Formerly Promoted as The Scent of the New Millennium...
Australian Blue Cypress Oil, ABC for short, was chosen as the "Essence of the 2000 Olympics". In spite of being enthusiastically received and labelled as a "new discovery" that could win over the world of perfumery and aromatherapy, Blue Cypress is now very rarely talked about (let alone used).
- Place of origin
- "Top End" of Northern Territory, and Melville Island, North of Darwin. Home of the Tiwi people.
- Production method
- Steam-distilled from the wood (and bark ??) of Callitris Intratropica (plantation trees).
- Main components
- Selinenes, guaiazulene, guaienes, guaiol, lactones, eudesmols, elemol and nearly 90 more.
- Aroma
- With its woody, smoky fragrance with sweet "liquorice" (aniseed) undertones, Australian Blue Cypress has similarities to sandalwood oils (Santalum album, Santalum spicatum, Amyris balsamifera), guaiac oil (Bulnesia sarmienti), vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) and some of the cedarwood oils.
- Main uses
- There is no current information on uses of ABC (Australian Blue Cypress) in perfumery, cosmetics, or aromatherapy. In fragrance blends, its dominant woody base note can help anchor top and middle notes.
- Comments
- Blue Cypress Oil has been reported to have some unique characteristics in the world of essential oils. Guaiazulene, which is not found in natural essential oils derived from wood, is responsible for ABC's blue colour note (we have however noted a tendency for Blue Cypress to oxidise and turn a pale amber/grey as the oil ages). Guaiazulene might also confer pharmaceutical qualities similar to those of the other natural blue oils, such as Chamomile, Artemisia and Tansy.
- Safety notes
- Reportedly safe in terms of toxicity, skin irritancy; but as with all essential oils, should be used sparingly. Avoid contact with eyes.
For full details, refer to MSDS, GC and Physicochemical Data reports from supplier/distiller..
- Blending suggestions
- Blends well with other Australian EO's and with tangy/citrus or flowery essential oils. Some suggested blends you might like to try include:
- 3 parts lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia), 1 part blue cypress
- 4 parts lime, 1 part blue cypress
