AquaSapone, premium grade essential oils from Australia for aromatherapy and cosmetics
MSDS's, GC analyses, physicochemical data sheets: What are these?
Information about essential oil safety, handling, storage and shipping restrictions; chemical analysis results; description of the physical (visible) properties and a list of chemical constituents can be obtained for each essential oil, either from the supplier, or from the distiller (the importer for essential oils coming from outside Australia).
- MSDS, short for Material Safety Data Sheet
- MSDS's are written to comply with workplace safety and transport regulations, and are therefore meant for people who use chemical substances in a work environment. Relevance and application of Material Safety Data Sheets can vary.
- Australian businesses (companies, sole traders, crafters, hobby-crafters) that purchase essential oils classified as "Hazardous Materials (for use in the workplace)" according to WorkSafe Australia are required to obtain Material Safety Data Sheets and follow their recommendations. Suppliers of essential oils (and other chemicals) that are classified as "Hazardous Materials" according to WorkSafe Australia are required to supply the relevant MSDS with orders.
- MSDS's are also always required for the shipment of any essential oils that are classified as Dangerous Goods (HazMat, or Hazardous Materials).
- GC, short for Gas-Chromatography Analysis (report)
- Gas-chromatography and mass-spectrometry are modern analysis techniques that allow to draw a "chemical photograph" of fluids. They are usually referred to with the acronyms GC analysis and GC report, or GC-MS analysis, GC-MS report. Because plant essential oils are "live" chemicals, GC-MS analysis reports vary from batch to batch, and can be obtained for any given batch of essential oil from the distiller (or from the importer for essential oils coming from outside Australia).
- Physicochemical Data Sheet
- A Physicochemical Data Sheet is a document describing in summary the physical and chemical characteristics of a given substance. For essential oils, Physicochemical Data Sheets can rport information about colour and other visual characteristics, a description of the scent, and a list of the major chemical constituents. Physicochemical Data Sheets can often be obtained from suppliers, distiller and importers before purchase.
